Spirulina Pie Gone Wrong

spirulina pie

Spirulina in a pie?  I know it sounds weird, but it tastes pretty good.  AND spirulina is supposedly great for clearing toxins from the body.  So I figure…what the hell.  I got this recipe from RAWvolution. The recipe actually calls for a 5 inch pie pan. Since I only had a 9 inch, I figured I’d just double the recipe, right?

first clue

This was my first clue that something was amiss. It didn’t want to congeal at room temp. Trying cutting a piece of that…

piece o pie

It tasted great, but it looked kind of scary. I took this to work for lunch and was subjected to an endless barrage of negativity. The girl who was sitting next to me took one look at it, and said ‘I’m sorry but that’s just disgusting’ (not that I asked her opinion). That opened the door to many unwelcome comments. I didn’t feel like spending energy defending my lunch to people with entrenched opinions, so I went home early that day. Who needs all that negativity? I’ve got more important things to do.

The pie held it’s form pretty well when frozen. While it didn’t make for a very solid pie, the filling was really creamy in consistency and would probably make a lovely batch of ice cream. Overall, I would say you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover.

RATING (on a scale of 1 to 5): 3
